FUSION

FUSION Represented at a Workshop on Life Cycle Assessment

The FUSION project was represented by Laura Rasines Elena, a member of the team at the Technical University of Cartagena (UPCT), one of the project partners, at the workshop “Life Cycle Assessment as a Tool for the Sustainable Transition of Businesses and Territories”, organised by the Spanish Association for Life Cycle Assessment (REDesLCA) and hosted by the University of Cantabria in Santander, Spain, on 30 September.

During the session “Sector-Specific Applications and Success Stories”, Laura presented “Environmental Footprint of Tomato Waste in the MENA Region”, work developed within the framework of FUSION.

The work focuses on quantifying tomato losses and waste in five countries in the MENA region, assessing the environmental footprint associated with waste management, estimating the impacts of resources wasted along the supply chain, and identifying the main shortcomings that contribute to food loss and waste.

One of the key findings presented was that the environmental footprint associated with wasted resources can account for between 20% and 50% of the total environmental footprint.

Laura also presented the solutions being developed within FUSION, which aims to reduce tomato and pepper food loss and waste by up to 40%. Through a combination of technologies and training initiatives, the project aims to tackle food loss and waste throughout the entire value chain, from production to consumption.
